Young Change Makers @ GYA
May 23, 2013
We don't want the younger ages to miss out on everything the Global Youth Assembly has to offer, so we've organized a special day just for them!
On August 9th, we're hosting a one-day leadership program for those aged 10 to 14 to learn about citizenship, leadership and human rights. Participants will have the opportunity to explore various topics on health and human rights as they learn about how they can promote equality, justice and freedom in our world.
The day will consist of exciting, hands-on activities and presentations covering the topics of Indigenous water rights, community gardens and much more! Energizing and educational human rights lessons will also be integrated throughout the program to ensure that children become aware of existing human rights issues and how to ignite change in their communities. Space is limited so register soon! Visit www.youthassembly.ca for more information and the complete schedule for the day.
Date: Friday, August 9, 2013
Time: 8:45am - 4:45pm
Location: University of Alberta, Edmonton Clinic Health Academy
Cost: $59
**Please note that participants are responsible for bringing their own lunch/snacks.
Get Out and Stay Out: Conversations About Multiculturalism
April 18, 2013
On November 1 and 2, 2012, in collaboration with The Kule Institute for Advanced Study, we had agencies, academics, and community members come together for Get Out and Stay Out: Conversations About Multiculturalism. During the two-day event, Dr. Alana Lentin, a renowned scholar on critical race theory, joined us from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, to reflect with us on the current state of multiculturalism both locally and globally. In an engaging and public discussion with University of Alberta professor Dr. Mojtaba Mahdavi , the two scholars gave a critical perspective on issues of race, racism and inclusion. The following day, representatives from community organizations joined Dr. Lentin to dialogue and network, as well as to communicate ideas for addressing issues of racism in Edmonton.
We recently released our Get Out and Stay Out final report, which includes findings from the roundtable discussion. With reflections from Dr. Lentin, the final report outlines the proposed recommendations for ways to engage and mobilize citizens in the crucial work of creating an Edmonton that is inclusive, accessible, and free of racism.

You've been waiting for it. So have we. Our 2013 Global Youth Assembly (GYA) is coming your way this summer from August 7th to 10th! Join hundreds of youth from across Canada and around the world to learn, discuss, reflect and collaborate.
This year's theme of HUMAN RIGHTS. HEALTH. IGNITE CHANGE NOW. will challenge you to think broadly about the connections between various aspects of health and human rights. While many approach the word health solely from the medical perspective, this conference will explore how the health of a community encompasses everything from political and civil rights to sports, immigration and, of course, public health. After four days of world-class keynote speakers, skill-building workshops and engaging activities, we guarantee that you'll leave the GYA inspired to make positive changes in your community!
