Get Out and Stay Out: Conversations About Multiculturalism

April 18, 2013

On November 1 and 2, 2012, in collaboration with The Kule Institute for Advanced Study, we had agencies, academics, and community members come together for Get Out and Stay Out: Conversations About Multiculturalism. During the two-day event, Dr. Alana Lentin, a renowned scholar on critical race theory, joined us from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, to reflect with us on the current state of multiculturalism both locally and globally. In an engaging and  public discussion with University of Alberta professor Dr. Mojtaba Mahdavi , the two scholars gave a critical perspective on issues of race, racism and inclusion. The following day, representatives from community organizations joined Dr. Lentin to dialogue and network, as well as to communicate ideas for addressing issues of racism in Edmonton.

We recently released our Get Out and Stay Out final report, which includes findings from the roundtable discussion. With reflections from Dr. Lentin, the final report outlines the proposed recommendations for ways to engage and mobilize citizens in the crucial work of creating an Edmonton that is inclusive, accessible, and free of racism.
