Crime Sim - CALL TO ACTION

May 9, 2016

The John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights & iHuman Youth Society Proudly Present:

                                                        The CRIMSIM Project

The CRIMSIM Project is an exciting training program for those who work in the area of justice and enforcement, as well as other front-line service providers; opening up opportunities for communication, compassion and transformation.

The CRIMSIM Project was developed in partnership with JHC’s Youth Action Project on Poverty (YAP) and delivered by iHuman’s Uncensored, a theatre-based program using drama to engage and educate. Using Uncensored award winning approach, the CRIMSIM offers a unique and powerful learning experience that engages youth as educators; developing scenarios and situations that provide insight into how negative stereotypes influence police- citizen interactions and how empathy and understanding can play a positive role in building safe communities.

CALL to ACTION!

On March 24, 2016 we launched The CRIMSIM Project to a room full of key stakeholders, partners and community members! We received an overwhelmingly positive response! Now is your chance to book a session for your organization and learn about the unique barriers facing many of our most vulnerable community members. Now is your chance to be part of positive change and challenging conversations that focus on promoting community safety from the ground up!

Background:

In 2014/15 The Youth Action Project on Poverty (YAP) learned about the realities and impacts of criminalization from those with lived experience. The youth came to understand that interactions between law enforcement and marginalized populations are o+en fraught with tension and can lead to safety and security issues for these individuals as well as the wider public. The youth felt that solutions lay in police and front line providers being trained and made aware of the negative impacts of criminalization on individuals and communities already facing barriers. The Youth Action Project recommendation called on The City to “support the implementation of the Criminalization Simulation developed in partnership with iHuman Youth Society’s ‘Uncensored’ program and the John Humphrey Centre through a commitment that every member of Edmonton Police Services will participate in the program as an element of training, as well as having the City advocate for the program through professional networks in Edmonton and beyond”.
