The Gall Conference: The State of Human Rights in Alberta
October 25, 2012
In memory of the late Gerald L. Gall, one of the founding fathers of the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, the Gall Conference provided a forum for critical conversation on the state of human rights in Alberta. Held on December 10, International Human Rights Day, and marking the 40th anniversary of the Alberta Bill of Rights and the Individual's Rights Protection Act (IRPA), as well as the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, this conference explored the current realities of human rights, existing barriers and opportunities, possible solutions and recommendations for improvement in the province. With keynote speaker Ron Ghitter, former Canadian Senator and founder of the IRPA, this event challenged us on our role in building a province where the rights and dignity of all are respected.
