“I am an Arab Muslim and also a  gay man in my 50’s…I keep wondering if those two aspects of my identity are mutually exclusive: can I be a gay man and BE Muslim? Does one eliminate the other? Coming out of my closet and being invited to talk at conferences came with its set of challenges: being disowned by some members of my family, receiving death threats, etc. What gets me nervous the most when I go to these conferences is the reaction I might receive from a Muslim person sitting at the audience. Even with me being in my 50’s, I am still longing for that acceptance. I love Islam, but sometimes I feel as though Islam doesn’t love me…”  ~ Anonymous
