Local peace organizations celebrate the International Day of Peace – September 21st

Edmonton, AB (September 21st, 2014) – Communities across the world will come together today, on the International Day of Peace, to celebrate peace and voice their hopes for a more peaceful world.

Several of Edmonton’s peace-related organizations have collaborated to host a variety of engaging and inspirational events that will allow Edmontonians to join in these exciting global celebrations. The Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace, the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights, the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action and the United Nations Association – Canada Edmonton Branch, among others, have created an inspirational mix of song, dance, spoken word, and keynote speeches that will inspire Edmontonians to think critically about their role in creating communities of peace, both at home and abroad.

The day’s events will begin at 12:00pm in Churchill Square, with the annual Peace Flag Raising Ceremony and will then move to City Hall for the “Right of Peoples to Peace” celebration. Performances include Global Voices Choir, One World Beat - Kita No Taiko and Sangea drumming performance, Ahmed “Knowmadic” Ali spoken word poet, and a closing dance and drum circle led by Marcus Fung. Speakers include the Honourable Douglas Roche; Renée Vaugeois, Executive Director of the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights; and Vivian Giang, UNA-Canada Edmonton Branch President. Throughout the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to browse the booths of a variety of peace-related organizations at the Building Peace Exhibition, learning more about the work Edmonton organizations are doing to build communities of peace.
